Earlier this week, our Coastal and Water Safety volunteers spent two days at David Lloyd Club in Exeter, supporting their Water Safety Week.
Throughout the event, we shared key water safety messages with a particular focus on the ‘Float to Live’ campaign. Children attending swimming lessons were also able to reinforce what they had learned through practical guidance with their instructors.
The sessions were very well received, and we engaged with approximately 140 young people and their parents over the two days.
A huge thank you to David Lloyd Club for inviting us to be part of their Water Safety Week. It was a pleasure to work together to help promote these vital lifesaving messages.

On July 4th, our Volunteer watchkeepers and Coastal and Water Safety team were on hand at Tesco’s Exmouth, collecting for our charity and speaking to patrons about coastal safety. They were joined by ‘SPOT the watchkeeper’, our new National mascot who entertained the grown-ups as well as the little people by spreading important coastal safety messages.
Thank you to all who gave generously. All donations will be used to keep us operational in our aging Victorian Lookout on Exmouth Sea front.

The NCI Exmouth Presentation Team were invited along to the Ladies of the Holy Ghost, who meet at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church Hall in Exmouth.

The small gathering were told about our charity and how our volunteer watchkeepers are an asset of His Majesty’s Coastguard by our Acting Station Manager, John.

Thank you for your excellent questions, hospitality and your very generous donation – and for the well received tea and cake!!

Talks form an important part of our fundraising efforts as the team relies on donations for over 50% of its funding.

Our NCI Exmouth station was chosen as the benefactor of the Budleigh Salterton Ladies Choir for their final Summer concert performance of the season at Holy Trinity Church in Exmouth.

We were treated to a wonderful selection of popular songs including ‘What a wonderful world ‘, ‘Under the sea’ and ‘Fields of gold’ to name just a few. As part of ‘NCI awareness weekend’, our secretary Hugh spoke to the gathered audience about our charity.

Thank you for choosing us and congratulations for a wonderful musical event.

Some of our volunteers were assisting this wet Saturday morning as marshals at the Exmouth Parkrun.

Also braving the conditions were our DSM Phil and Fundraising Manager Roger to highlight our charity and give out information about our SaR role.

Thank you to all the watchkeepers who not only took part in the run, but helped the event on the route.

People have been warned of the dangers of swimming in open water after multiple deaths during the recent heatwave.

The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) issued a warning following the fatal incidents, most of which involved children, saying “warmer weather unfortunately sees an increase in accidental drownings”.

It warned water temperatures remain very cold despite increased air temperatures, and that cold water shock could make swimming difficult and harder to get out of the water.

In all during the hotter weather, at least seven young people have died in the water, as well as a man in his 60s and a woman in her 70s.
